class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Last spring 2023, as part of our survey on acute respiratory diseases, we asked participants about the cold season in autumn\/winter 2022\/2023.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>37,708 DigiHero participants<\/strong> reported a total of <strong>54,813 acute respiratory illnesses.<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">For 79% of these diseases, we were also provided with the results of a SARS-CoV-2 test.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This allowed us to identify 9,358 infections as COVID-19 diseases.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This means that 25% of DigiHero participants were infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the winter of 2022\/2023.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Figure A shows the monthly new infections we calculated for acute respiratory diseases with and without a positive test for SARS-CoV-2.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">An analysis by age group showed that young DigiHero participants in particular became infected with acute respiratory diseases (see Figure B).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section Our data shows that SARS-CoV-2 caused 21% additional acute respiratory illnesses. Extrapolated to the adult population of Germany, this would mean at least 17 million additional infections during the cold season. An analysis of infection data from the Robert Koch Institute&#8217;s GrippeWeb portal provided similar results.
